“The March of Events”

Julian Huxley, in proposing the new religion of Evolutionary Humanism, contends that

It is certainly a fact that Christianity does not, and I would add cannot, satisfy an increasing number of people: and it does not and cannot do so because it is a particular brand of religion, which is no longer related or relevant to the facts of existence as revealed by the march of events or the growth of knowledge.

Julian's brother Aldous put it this way:

I had motives for not wanting the world to have meaning; consequently assumed that it had none, and was able without any difficulty to find satisfying reasons for this assumption. The philosopher who finds no meaning in the world is not concerned exclusively with a problem in pure metaphysics, he is also concerned to prove that there is no valid reason why he personally should not do as he wants to do, or why his friends should not seize political power and govern in the way that they find most advantageous to themselves. . . . For myself, the philosophy of meaninglessness was essentially an instrument of liberation, sexual and political.

Both of these rejections of Christianity are purely subjective. They are not based on objective facts, but upon autonomous desires. "The March of Events" boils down to "me and my friends." Which is not to say that a few like-minded would-be gods cannot have devastating impact across the globe:

• Marx (who wanted to dedicate Das Kapital to Darwin) and Stalin and Lenin rejected Christianity for similar reasons: the "inevitable" historical triumph of "the dictatorship of the proletariat."
• Hitler also rejected Christianity in light of "the march of events" as he saw it: the triumph of the fully-evolved master race throughout the fatherland, exemplifying the laws of "natural selection."
• Atheistic governments around the world have rejected Christian morality in order to prop up their dictatorships with the corpses of nearly half a billion people in the 20th century.
• The Clinton-Gore regime has institutionalized adolescent selfishness to unparalleled levels, replacing a Christian government of law and morality with a Secular Humanistic rule of elite lawyers and pandemic immorality.
• Alfred Kinsey set in motion a "march of events" which has unleashed millions of unwanted pregnancies, distorted sexuality, child abuse, broken families, and suicide.
• And as America's ruling elite have abandoned Christian morals in favor of Huxley's evolutionary humanism, America has become more Hitlerian.

As an excuse for rejecting Christianity, "the march of events" is also a self-fulfilling prophecy. It is a call to action, a sermon preached to the choir, and an attempt to bewilder Christians into believing they are a hopeless minority.

Secular Humanism is an intellectual rationalization for rebelling against God. But the modern world of violent atheism is a sorry substitute for the Christian world of Vine & Fig Tree.
